Two twelfth-grade students from a St. Albert, Alberta, Canada school have waged war on hurtful language by creating a poster campaign to combat derogatory terms.

Thanks to support from school staff, as well a University of Alberta grant, this campaign has become hugely popular and is now in its second year. Posters are currently displayed in the halls of the original St. Albert school; however, many are calling for the campaign to expand in order to reach a broader audience.

The posters feature students who are considered role models in the school alongside a derogatory term with an explanation of why it’s inappropriate. Students and staff explain the campaign is informative and ultimately helps create a kinder environment.

In a day and age where language is thrown around with ease, it’s nice to see that some students are reminding everyone that words are an extremely powerful tool.
